In response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, The Breast Cancer Fund (TBCF) identifies -- and advocates for elimination of -- the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Founded in 1992, TBCF works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority that demands action from all.

Every mountain climb we organize- from local peaks to Mt. McKinley -- is dedicated to the women who find the courage to face the disease. Every publication we produce -- from our quarterly newsletter to State of the Evidence: What is the Connection Between Chemicals and Breast Cancer? -- is committed to informing and mobilizing a public to be unrelenting in preventing the disease from striking more people. And every program we undertake- from strengthening environmental health policy to organizing International Summits on Breast Cancer and the Environment -- is essential to securing the institutional changes and policy reforms necessary to eliminate the environmental links to breast cancer.

With this work TBCF seeks to do justice to the women whose struggle and dedication inspire our resolve. By working together, with daring, dedication, and determination, we can move mountains, one step at a time.

Benefit Rafting Trip on the Sacramento River
$2000 donated to the Breast Cancer Support Fund

May 4, 2003

sac Despite rainy skies and cool temperatures 36 enthusiastic people gathered Sunday May 4th for the River Dancers rafting trip to benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and the "Local Women Climbing against the Odds on Mt Shasta". In July, a team of 48 breast cancer survivors and supporters will climb the mountain to bring attention to the environmental causes of the disease.

"I love the project and how the community is coming together. I came to have fun" said Bonnie Kubowitz, of the Mt Shasta Chamber of Commerce.

A flotilla of 7 rafts navigated the 12 miles between Sims and Mosquito Creek. The river was flush and full, swollen with waterfalls and cascading side streams. Big hydraulics and fast, bouncy waters made for lots of paddling excitement and fun. Terry Thompson, cancer survivor and one of our July local climbers said: "It has been a long process, coming out a place of fear into a new life, surrounded by people who are supportive, kind and generous. It has dulled the memories of anguish. The river trip was everything I wanted it to be, another level of excitement, challenge and education."

Vince Cloward of the Dunsmuir River Exchange, Rusty Eads, Rodney Barr, Renee Casterline, Tom Tuttle and the owners and staff of River Dancers donated their time and services for the event. Fresh fruit was provided by General Produce of Mt Shasta. The oversize trip was run with special permission of Stacy Smith of the Forest Service.

"What impressed me most, over and above the fun and shared camaraderie, was that people, guests and guides, were there to support a great cause" says John McDermott co-owner of River Dancers.

$2000 were raised and directly donated to the Breast Cancer Fund.

Climb Against the Odds - Mt Shasta

In July 2003, a team of 48 breast cancer survivors and supporters of The Breast Cancer Fund will climb Mt. Shasta to make their vision of preventing breast cancer a reality. They will challenge the 14,162' mountain, themselves, and the silence about the environmental causes of an epidemic that now affects one in every eight women.

Climb Against the Odds - Mt. Shasta continues The Breast Cancer Fund's commitment to combine activism and adventure in our efforts to prevent the disease. The expedition's brave climbers will follow in the footsteps of the incredible women and men who climbed Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina; Mt. McKinley, Alaska; and Mt. Fuji, Japan. This intense challenge on Mt. Shasta, California, an imposing volcano close to the Oregon border, will raise over $500,000 in support of The Breast Cancer Fund's mission to identify -- and advocate for elimination of -- the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease.
