Stewardship
"Adventure,
like life, has consequences.
What we do, what we consume, and where we go have an impact.
As tourism continues to explode on our small
planet ...it's never been
more crucial to get to that place where good, clean and fun intersect". Outside
Magazine
Safeguarding natural and cultural
resources is tourism’s future. Providing for conservation and
education and inviting community participation is a powerful tool
for sustainability .

The Upper Sacramento
River Exchange is a non-profit organization
located in Dunsmuir, California that promotes healthy watersheds in Siskiyou
County through stewardship, restoration, education, and community involvement.
It all began
as a project of the City of Dunsmuir in 1996, created in the aftermath of
the disastrous Cantara Loop railroad spill that destroyed all plant and animal
life along a thirty-six mile stretch of the Upper Sacramento. Since that
time the River Exchange has grown into an independent and self-sustaining
organization. Along the way, it has taught thousands of schoolchildren about
the importance of rivers, and how to be good stewards of their watersheds.
The river Exchange's
members live throughout California and in other parts of the country. They
share the common desire to see the spectacular rivers and watersheds of far
northern California remain healthy and productive, and to be sustained for
future generations to enjoy.
